In lugnet.off-topic.debate, David Eaton writes:

Objectivism: Something is true if it is falsifiable, supported by the
evidence, not contradicted by any evidence and logical.

Nitpick, for things in general, that's only sufficient to show that they are
"likely" to be true. We used to think that indivisible atoms were likely to
be true. They gave good predictions and were a good tool. Now we know
they're not, but we know more (have more evidence to examine) than we used to.

Now we think things are made of quarks. Thinking that satisfactorily
explains all the stuff that the indivisible atom theory explains, plus a
whole bunch of new stuff. But quarks may be divisible too.

Doesn't matter. Either way we are currently at our best understanding of
matter and we can objectively reason and predict lots of stuff.

I'm pretty sure you meant what I just said but I wanted to put it out there
before someone worked what you said to try to refute.

BTW I was thinking about the 'is "good theories must be falsifiable"
falsifiable?' conundrum and I think I have a way out but I'm not sure...

(...) Correct me if I'm wrong Steve, but I think the argument goes something like: 'God will show Himself to you if you are faithful/willing to listen. You, posessing free will may not be open to His presentation of Himself, and even if you are (...) (24 years ago, 22-Dec-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
