No public school would ever allow that level of innovation and

HEY! Watch your mouth.

I go to a public school (district: http://www.chuh.org ), and although
LEGO was rarely used in the education I received, I have received, for
the most part, a good education.  There are different levels for each
class offered, so people who need to be challenged will be challenged.
At the America High School Mathematics Examination (AHSME), our school
was 9th in the state (INCLUDING private schools, over which we often
excel).  The Calculus teacher has received a national award, students
come from other schools to play with our award-winning symphony
orchestra, and art students win awards every year.  The National Honor
Society has more than 40 members, and one senior is a candidate for the
Presidential Award this year.
Not all students are antisocial shooters!  We did have an arsonist this
year (3 fires), but no one was hurt, and that (the fires) is very
abnormal.  There are also classes to help those who are not quite up to
par academically (eg, the Proficiency Prep. class to help students who
haven't passed the Ohio 9th grade proficiency test, had a 70% passage
rate last year.)
There are many excellent teachers at the school as well (they get paid
are than private school teachers too).  The Calculus teacher went to a
private school for a year, and CAME BACK because the students at Heights
High are more dedicated.

Maybe you should be careful of what you say before you offend someone
else.

PS: About LEGO in education: I think it's a great idea.  In 1st grade, we
had LEGO Dacta sets to play with simple machines.  In middle school, I
was part of the Middle School Scholars Program (a pull-out program for
extended. more independent study).  For my projects, I always
incorporated some sort of LEGO demonstration.  The middle school I
attended has recently received a grant for its "Rocket Zone" in the
library, which includes LEGO, K'NEX, a wood shop, a TV studio, a kitchen,
a wind tunnel, computers everywhere, and more.  (Check out Schools,
Roxboro Middle, Rocket Zone at chuh.org).  I agree that it is a pity that
more teachers don't see the potential of LEGO as an educational tool.

(...) Maybe you should be careful of what you hear? Would it be better if Larry had said "only one in ten thousand public schools would allow that level..." ? Nothing you said suggested that Weird Richard's operation would fly in your school (...) (25 years ago, 12-May-99, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
