Funny, in the US anyway, it seems that the public transit that works the best
was built a long time ago by private companies, and the public transit built
recently in cities that didn't have any doesn't usually work at all.
Here in Zurich, the transit works GREAT. It's all unified and with a Tageskarte
you can ride trams, funiculars, rack railways, canal boats, ships, trains,
busses (diesel and electric) and subways within your zone for 24 hours for
about 5 bucks. But then the pop density is a lot bigger and I'm convinced that
there is some cost shifting going on somewhere, they HAVE to be losing money.
I especially like the part about rack railways! Those are cool. Several
evenings now I have just gotten on trams and rode them to the end of the line
and back to see what was there, and I found some neat stuff (not stores, the
stores are all closed by the time I get out of work, darn blue laws) like the
trolley museum and impromptu fairs.
FUT o-t.debate since this is flamebait.
