Wow, I never thought of it that way before -- and I agree 100%.
Just as one has to have faith that God does exist in order to be a "theist,"
one has to have faith that God does not exist in ordre to be an "atheist."
That is, there's really no way to prove or to know for sure that one or the
other points of view is correct. (And maybe they're both correct. :-)
Most people would label me an atheist because I don't currently happen to
believe that a higher being exists, and because I do believe that Man evolved
from Ape and that the Earth is several billion years old and that much of HB
is BS.
But I have a tough time labeling myself an atheist because I simply cannot
take it on _faith_ one way or the other. But I can't label myself agnostic
either, because I don't actually wonder about it. Is there a label for
someone who is apathetic as to the issue of whether or not a higher being
exists and rules the universe? Because in my mind, it doesn't matter one way
or the other. Or, more specifically, the probability that it actually matters
one way or the other is so close to zero (in my mind) that it isn't worth
spending effort on.
