I'm not sure that it's possible to write this and assure that it won't
be taken the wrong way, and maybe since I'm responding to something a
month old, I should just let it go, but as you've already guessed, I'm
not going to. (I'm going to share too much.)
Tim asserts that through creation of the darwin fish a Christian symbol
has been "torn apart...to represent (our) lack of faith."
First thing to note is that I like the Darwin fish because I think it's
a clever turnabout. It never before today occurred to me that it would
actually offend people as an abuse of their religious icon. I was
stupid not to have come to that conclusion, it now seems obvious.
The second thing to point out is that the Darwin fish for us (me) is a
symbol of faith, not a symbol glorifying my lack of faith. Darwin as a
representative of (good) science in general is a lighthouse trying to
guide me through the miasma of common belief rooted in folk-lore to
truth. Truth and knowledge, understanding of the universe, explaining
in rational terms which are equally valid regardless of social
programming, the events occurring around us are the most important
things in the world to _me_. Being right is more important than being happy.
The Darwin fish is like a religious icon for those of us who believe in
a better way of locating truth than what has gone before. The fish
represents your savior and the Darwin fish represents mine. I'm glad
that I don't get offended when I see the fish on buildings and cars.
Me too.
