You are correct. Among Yahwehs other seemingly outdated, outmoded, and
highly mythologized views of the world, its beginnings, and how it functions,
it is evident he subscribes to some form of the ancient Near Eastern myth of
a creator god who (as a necessary part of creation, apparently?) defeats in
battle the primal force of chaos, often depicted as a multi-headed sea
monster, sometimes known as Leviathan.
The identification of Behemoth is less clear. And as far as I recall, in
Job, Yahweh does not boast of defeating Behemoth, merely of having created
him. But he does note that only his maker could defeat him (with a sword).
As you probably noted, I pared down the dialogue in Job considerably for my
illustrated version. Most of what I chopped out came from the incredibly
long-winded speeches of Jobs friends. But I did also decide to trim
Yahwehs big speech at the end. It was difficult to decide what not to
include there because Yahwehs boasts are all pretty damn good, and I did
want to give the viewer an idea of just how many he delivers in a row,
uninterupted. He really browbeats poor Job.
Alas, the boasts about Leviathan and Behemoth I left out, partly because they
might only serve to confuse the reader. Perhaps one day Ill compile all the
Bibles references to Yahwehs primordial battle with Leviathan and
illustrate those as part of The Creation. Hmmm.

Hi!
When looking into The Book of Job again (latest Swedish version from 2000) I
noted that, as you correctly says, Yahweh created Behemoth, not defeated it. I
have read somewhere that Behemoth is a Hippopotamus, which fits well to Yahwehs
descrition if it. Im sorry I dont remember exactly where I read it.
I also must say it was a very wise choice to shorten the speeches!

| (...) Thanks, Anders. (...) Very interesting to hear. I've wondered if this project would actually result in people reading the Bible who might not have otherwise. A lot of it is really not a bad read if you've got the stomach for it. Other parts (...) (16 years ago, 25-Nov-08, to lugnet.build.ancient, FTX)
