Its an electronic symbol of the Ischtus (I think?) Fish, Christians put them
on their cars (at least in the US).  It was a symbol the apostles used in the
early church, etc.  You see then plain, with Jesus in the middle, and with
IX0YE too, its some acronym in ancient Greek.

Right as far as it goes, but the reason WHY is that Jesus is often
referred to as the fisher of men's souls, and he instructed his apostles
to continue his work. (0)

One of my all time favorite movies, and my ultimate favorite when chosen
from the class that is primarily religious, is "the Shoes of the
Fisherman" about the ascendancy of a Pope (played by Anthony somebody,
who also played Zorba the Greek (1)) from a communist country. The title
comes from that notion(2).

0 - I'm not christian but I certainly am not ignorant of christianity. I
probably know a bit more about it than several people who read the bible
each day but haven't figured out any of what it's telling them...

1 - movie trivia is NOT my strong suit. It's a 1950s or 60s movie, I
think...

2 - The Pope is the spiritual descendant of Jesus and supposedly holds
the same authority over the Church that Jesus did.. hence this character
was filling the shoes of the fisherman. (3)

3 - and I read a MOST amusing story in which the Pope was the defendant
in a lawsuit in which the plaintiff was trying to recover damages that
his insurance company would not pay since they had an Act of God clause.
His legal basis was that very claim of god granted authority over the
church vested in the current pope.
