Fortunately for Dan (but arguably unfortunately for Lar and others in the community who have clashes with him) he has a monopoly on this type of brickshop site. Sure, you can argue that there are other places to sell LEGO online -- but *none* that come close to comparing with the power and features of BL.

In my whole life I have never corresponded with a more ardent proponent of the free market system than Lar, so I’m confident that Lar would assert that Bricklink is not a natural monopoly. As such, if the market will bear a second online bulk venue like Bricklink, then such a venue will arise before too long. When it does, Lar may pursue his “don’t buy the last one” policy there.

Lar--if I have mis-stated your view re: natural monopoly, please correct me and accept my apology.

Anyways, the point being - Dan is free to run his site *like* a crazed dictator (not calling him one, but likening actions) and not see the immediate consequences of lost customers to a close competitor. However, this action may prove far more damaging to his business in the long run should disgruntled customers decide to compete.

I’ve managed a few small restaurants in my day, and I always knew that it was time to let an employee go when he said something like “I don’t need this job” or “I can do better somewhere else.” Once those rubicon statements are uttered, you’re better off facilitating the departure of the utterer, because he’s obviously made his decision already.

If a Bricklink customer were going to create a competing site, he would likely have done so eventually regardless of Dan’s or Lar’s actions.

Dave!

(...) Dan deserves quite a bit of thanks for what he's done. However, unlike many sites, BL was created as a business venture rather than a totally benevolent effort. People pay Dan to list their wares, they're buying a service. If Dan knows what's (...) (20 years ago, 23-Aug-04, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)
