Yeah, Russia is _almost_ bigger than any two of the other 5 largest nations,
even after having large chunks of the ex-U.S.S.R. lopped off (and one of those
chunks still ranks at #9 for both total land-mass and total area).
In 1998, the rankings were as follows for total land-mass:
Russia: 17 million km2
China: 9.33 million km2
Canada: 9.22 million km2
US: 9.16 million km2
Brazil: 8.46 million km2
And for total geographic area:
Russia: 17.08 million km2
Canada: 9.98 million km2
US: 9.63 million km2
China: 9.60 million km2
Brazil 8.51 million km2
Now I know why noone can agree on whether Canada or China is the 2nd largest
country. Wanna hear something scary? The US is the only country in the world
that ranks in the top 5 for GNP, population, and per capita income combined.
Even scarier is what that money's being used for. If you rank the world's
nations by military expendatures in 1998 (with a Democrat in the Oval Office, no
less), the US spent $1.3 billion more than the next ten countries combined.
