   The Talking Dog

A guy walks into a bar with a dog under his arm, puts the dog on the bar and announces that the dog can talk and that he has $100 he’s willing to bet anyone who says he can’t. The bartender quickly takes the bet and the owner looks at the dog and asks, “What’s the thing on top of this building which keeps the rain from coming inside?”

The dog answers “ROOF.”

The bartender says, “Who are you kidding? I’m not paying!” The dogs owner says, “How about double or nothing and I’ll ask him something else.” The bartender agrees and the owner turns to the dog and asks, “Who was the greatest ballplayer of all time?”

The dog answers with a muffled “RUTH.”

With that the bartender picks them both up and throws them out the door. As they bounce on the sidewalk, the dog looks at his owner and says, “DiMaggio?”

(One of my favorite jokes:-)

Yup, that’s always been a good one. :-)

But as if on cue to back me up:

“Research Finds Dogs Understand Language”

I didn’t need research to have figured this out. My dog brings the right toy when I ask for it (tug-of-war, squeeky, ball), and will go look for them where I tell him (upstairs, downstairs). While the bird chimes in “get the ball” once he hears the ball being bounced. And it was gotten to the point that I can’t even spell w-a-l-k out loud without the dog jumping up and down excitedly. The Far Side cartoon got it wrong. ;-)

The cat doesn’t even understand “food”. The Far Side got that one right.

(...) I practically worshipped Gary Larson, but I digress;-) Okay, I admit that some animals can learn some things. Perhaps this debate should have begun at the topic of sentiency. Can we not agree that, while being mammels, we are vastly different (...) (20 years ago, 10-Jun-04, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)
