A Band of Brothers: The Rebuilding of Iraq
http://www.misleader.com/special_reports/
Recent estimates now put the final figure somewhere between $200 billion to as
much as half a trillion dollars over the next ten years.
Americas Iraq-sticker-shock may turn to anger when taxpayers discover the small
group of men and companies reaping the benefits of President Bushs newly found
appreciation for nation building.
While Vice President Dick Cheneys company, Halliburton has attracted most of
press attention for its Iraq-related contracts; Halliburton is hardly the whole
story. Halliburtons share is but a slice of multi-billion dollar pie being
divided up among a brotherhood of unusually well connected and economically
related individuals and entities.
Edit: the MUST read special report is located here:

Good bits:
Halliburton / Kellogg Root & Brown (KRB) -- Houston, Texas; www.halliburton.com
By far the biggest winner in post-war Iraq has been Vice President Dick Cheney?s
former company, Halliburton. It is difficult for anyone unfamiliar with the
scope and depth of Halliburton?s relationship with the Pentagon to comprehend
the lock this company has on key defense projects.
Science Applications International, Inc. (SAIC) -- San Diego California,
www.saic.com Noteworthy: Some of SAIC?s work comes through sub-contracts with
defense firm Vinnell Corp., a subsidiary of TRW. One of those contracts involves
advising the Saudi Royal family on security matters. Vinnell is a leader in
training foreign military forces to U.S. standards. Vinnell has been the
contractor for training and modernization of the Saudi Arabian National Guard.
It advertises for ex-soldiers able to train the Saudis in battalion operations,
the Bradley fighting vehicle, anti-tank weapons and physical security to guard
against terrorist attacks. ( Ref: Global Research

And theres a Diebold connection in there too!
Baker-Hughes -- Houston, Texas
Even before the report was made public, investors were already picking winners
and losers. On a longer-term basis, however, the (Iraqi oil) fields have been
long neglected and are in need of repair. Two U.S. companies that are obvious
beneficiaries are Halliburton (HAL), and Baker Hughes (BHI). (Bull & Bear
Investors Report).
This company has a longterm association with the Bushs gong back to the
Presidency of Bush Sr. and they also have political backing from Rice and
Cheney. Read the report for more...
Bechtel Group Inc. -- San Francisco, Ca.; www.bechtel.com
They (Halliburton) had data and information the rest of us are not even capable
of gathering? so it is hard to pull together a cohesive plan, he said.
Conclusion:
In the financial services world when a bank or other financial institution gets
so big that its failure would send shockwaves through the economy, that
institution is deemed TBF - Too Big to Fail. Once a bank achieves TBF status
the government steps in and does whatever it takes to plug the holes and keep it
afloat. Sometimes executives are fired and occasionally even prosecuted. But,
the institution lives on. But the biggest US defense contractors who have
cornered critical chunks of defense work have achieved an even more dubious
status: TBF/TBJ - Too Big to Fail/TooBig to Jail.
Bush Tried to Take Funds from Military School Kids to Pay for Iraqi-Afghan
Policies
http://www.misleader.com/daily_mislead/printer_friendly.asp?fn=df10132003.html
President Bush attempted to slash money from the program that pays to educate
the children of military men and women even while saying, Our men and women in
uniform give America their best and we owe them our support.1
At the same time the President lauded the great courage2 of the soldiers he
sent to Iraq, he requested major cuts in the Impact Aid3 program that provides
funds for the schooling of the 900,0004 children of military families. Bush
tried to take $172 million from Impact Aid5 and shortchange its funding by $583
million under the No Child Left Behind Act. The cutbacks would have directly
affected children of troops currently deployed in Iraq.6

The Pentagons Achilles Heel
http://www.tompaine.com/feature2.cfm/ID/9194
This past weekend, United Press Internationals Mark Benjamin?assisted by Steven
Robinson of the National Gulf War Resource Center, a veterans advocacy
group?broke the story that hundreds of injured Iraq War veterans were stranded
in dismal barracks at Ft. Stewart, Ga., while they were awaiting medical care.
Theyre being treated like dogs, is how one officer who didnt want his name
used put it, speaking to TomPaine.com before the UPI story broke. There is not
a smile on this sector of the post. I have never seen as many sad people in one
place in all my life.
The situation described by this officer and by UPI was one where injured
National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers were languishing while waiting for
military doctors to fully diagnose their injuries and do the paperwork for
future medical benefits. The veterans?some with injuries that will become
lifelong disabilities?were living in large barracks with double bunk beds and no
indoor plumbing. Soldiers who paid $10 day could get a smaller, shared room with
air conditioning and a bathroom.
Ive been in the military for 30 ½ years and never thought the Army would
turn on its own like this, said First Sgt. Gerry Mosley, of the National
Guards 296th Transportation Company from Brookhaven, Miss. I am not in a case
by myself. They are telling you its going to be four to six months if youre
going through a medical evaluation.
The account given by Mosley and other soldiers at Ft. Stewart is at odds with
the support-the-troops rhetoric from top Pentagon and White House officials. Yet
its part of a pattern of lapses in military health policies that have occurred
during the course of the Iraq War.
Gay Apocalypse Now
http://www.alternet.org/print.html?StoryID=17017
We are committed to using every tool at our disposal to ensure that marriage in
America remains exclusively one man and one woman, said Tony Perkins of the
Family Research Council, a right-wing political lobbying group. Perkins has
friends in high places, like Congress and the White House.
A Constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of gay relationships,
including marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships has the support of 90
members of Congress, with more signing on every month. Never mind that it would
be the first time in U.S. history the Constitution would be changed to deny
rights to a specific group of people.
In California, the new domestic partnership benefits signed into law by outgoing
Governor Davis already face two lawsuits and a possible referendum to stop them.
And anti-gay marriage laws are being proposed in cities and states across the
country. In places where these laws have already passed, new laws are being
proposed to strengthen the old ones. There is indeed blood in the water.

| (...) This is disgusting. Its a flagrant attempt to circumvent the protections of the first, ninth, and tenth amendments. The real question is will most people care enough to stop it. Further proof that our government will take away as many rights (...) (21 years ago, 22-Oct-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)
