deep-seated belief that open markets lead to stronger economies, more jobs and
higher living standards. Last year, his shortsighted moves to raise tariffs on
steel imports and back $190 billion in government farm subsidies gave U.S.
industry a boost over foreign competitors. Longer term, however, such actions
raise prices for U.S. consumers and prompt other nations to retaliate against
American goods."
They say it like they're shocked, just SHOCKED, that Bush II would pander to
special interests instead of hewing to principle. How charmingly quaint, but who
is fooled here? Not me.
Other mass media (see this week's Time (1) in the Reagan letters article) say
Bush II is carrying out Reagan's legacy. They say he is more like Reagan than
Bush I was. While the latter is marginally true ( a snail is more like a rabbit
than a slime mold is) the former? Hah!
Anyway, I'm in the camp that thinks NAFTA is a good thing. But hey, lower
tariffs are always a good thing. Even unilaterally, although bilateral is better
and general tariff reduction/elimination is best.
1 - hey, I get it for free(2). I wouldn't actually PAY to get it. My PAID
magazine subscriptions are limited to The Economist and TRAINS and Forbes.
2 - well actually Nikolai does, via airline miles he had that were going to
expire anyway...
