Yes. And that's a very good argument for throwing it away.
Tax does not *have* to be complex.
Did you know that the NZ tax code for private income earners (your
personal tax return) is down to about 20 pages for the March 1999
return? Thats four pages to fill in, and about 15 pages of explanation.
There are all of about 40 figures to fill in even if you have every
possible deduction and a heap of jobs. Mine was one set of income
plus tax paid, copied onto every page, then a simple tax to pay
calculation (add three numbers), a subtraction and a cheque to write.
Even I managed to do it :) NZ has progressive taxation, but only
three levels (zero, 24% and 32%) and few deductions. You want
deductions, register as a business of some sort ($US50/pa) and
do the more complex business tax forms. Next year apparently
there will be no personal tax forms at all. It will all be
done by your boss because they've simplified it some more :)
