Something very disturbing is growing and gaining support since the beginning
of the Iraqi crisis in USA.  This, in my opinion, is more threatening than
any dictator.  It's called blind-nationalism.

In 1970, the FLQ (Front de Lebération du Québec), made a few terrorist
attacks in Québec, killing very few people, but leading to what is called
"La crise d'Octobre", the period in Octobre 1970 when the Canadian Army
entred in Montreal and limited the rights of Québécois because of a few
extremists.  I am a nationalist.  I refer to Québec as my country and Canada
is a foreing country for me.  Although I tend to be in favor of anything
that is bad for Canadians because I consider them as enemies (in a political
point of view only), I do not support terrorist activities.  The FLQ didn't
help our cause.  It only made more suffering.

The USA is about to live a similar event, but without the Army entering NY
like in "The Siege" or anything like that.  No, what I'm talking about is
the extremists that think that violence and repression is the only way to
deal with dictators and that are willing, in a lesser way, to use the same
ways against their compatriots that have a different point of view.

Thanks to John Neal (I'm being sarcastic here), we can read all kind of
papers written by right-extremists saying that Peace movements are
anti-patriotic, that there are enemies within the borders of USA and that
these people are supporters of Saddam, Fidel or whoever.  These people also
accuse France, and as far as I know, only France, of being corrupt Muslim
protectors, enemies, fascists, you name it.  I could go on and on, but I'm
sure everyone knows what I'm talking about.

I've been accused recently of being Anti-American because I say that War is
stupid, that the US should be disarmed and that the worst threat to world
peace right now is USA.  I'm not anti-American.  At least, not totally.
Politically, I simply despies Bush and the Republicans.  I'm no more
anti-american than Americans are Anti-anything-not-american...

Hatred against Muslims is starting to grow, but very few people notice it
or, worse, condemn it.  Muslims are no worse that Christians.  They seek a
peaceful life, they have family values, although different than Christians.
There are only a minority that is extremist.  Just as a minority of
Christians are extremists.  So religion has nothing to do with it.

US has always been is Israel's side for different reasons, but it's the
first time in history that anti-Islam is the main reason.  This is scary.
What next?

Right-extremists use very pervasive ways of convincing people that they are
right.  They want to make you believe that you are either on their side or
not.  If not, then you do not support US troops.  I've read articles and
seen propaganda posters and banners that push the message further.  You are
either pro-war or you wish that US soldiers will be killed.  It's subtle,
but it's exactly what they mean.  People here on Lugnet are discussing these
issues and they quote these articles as if they were facts.  I can't help
but use John Neal as the perfect example for the pro-war, right-wing
arrivist that believes or want to believe everything that these people say.
Sorry John, but you already know what I think of you.  You are not alone,
alas, but you are the worst case.

I am happy that Québec and Canada didn't support the war.  I'm happy to see
France, Rusia, Germany and other countries not joining US and GB in this
war.  I realize that Russia doesn't have a good reputation in US.  Germany
sure did some collateral damage in the past, but France has always fought on
US side.  They were with US against BG and they offered US the statue of
Liberty.  Now, they are the enemy only because they wanted the UN to
continue the inspections...  and the US Army has found nothing yet in Iraq.

Then there is Syria, N. Corea, Cuba, etc.  Why do many people in US want to
see their boys, their sons, theirs husbands of boyfriends die in military
conflicts for nothing?  Why not seek peace rather that war?  Why not help
the rest of the world building a peaceful planet rather than wasting lifes,
ressources, time and energy in war, hatred and witch-hunts ?

The most fascist people I see are the right-wing extremists that write the
kind of articles that John Neal brings us.  This is scary.  I'm very
saddened to see that the most powerful nation in the world is also beginning
to forget what is freedom, peace and love.

Terry

(...) Let me re-phrase that... I consider Canada as our political adversaries, so I tend to agree with anything that gives an advantage to Québec Over Canada. I don't wish bad stuff will happen to Canada, as one could have understand from the first (...) (21 years ago, 19-Apr-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
