Do you want the "everything's always right, exactly right, literally right"
explanation?  If so, then he hanged himself, fell off the tree (perhaps he
rotted off, perhaps the knot didn't hold), and broke open.  And when he
bought the field and how it was paid for probably didn't matter back then,
so he could easily have been credited with buying the field even if he
didn't pay for it, since it was his money.

Do you want a continuity explanation?  He was feeling guilty, he died in a
field, they replaced him, don't worry about the details.
