Let's keep it in perspective; there has been no "removal of any reference"
to the Towers. Last night on Spin City I saw a clear shot of them, and the
syndicated Simpsons recently showed the episode in which the family treks to
NYC and Homer has to use the bathroom in one of the Towers. The 1976 "epic"
King Kong aired not too long ago on one of my local stations, which I
believe shows the big ape actually leaping from one tower to the other.
What you're describing is mostly post-tragedy changes to new materials, and
I really don't think it's too baffling. It might be worth thinking of it as
a legitimate sensitivity issue rather than some kind of PC revisionism,
especially considering the timing of the Spider-Man promo which was
basically concurrent with the actual tragedy. There were also a few CD's
slated for release that showed the Trade Center towers exploding, and these
were likewise cancelled out of respect for the victims.
Revisionism, as I understand it, it an after-the-fact alteration of
existing material to suit some later purpose. Holocaust denial is one
example, as is the anachronistic inclusion of key political figures from
centuries ago into one's current political agenda, in effect abitrarily
deciding on behalf of those deceased figures when they can no longer
dissent. That's also why it's ridiculous for the group that I cited to
demand a change to Tolkien's pre-existing work when that work was and is
wholly separate from the Trade Center tragedy.
In contrast, the trend that you cite is toward a sensitive handling of
images that may seem a deliberate exploitation of the victims' deaths, and I
don't see how that's inappropriate. Furthermore, if Columbia/TriStar itself
chose not to air the promo, who are we to second guess their motives? It's
their intellectual property, so it's up to them.
Dave!
