Luckily, the times I've seen you
in real life have been nothing like your persona in here, so maybe it's just
something that people in this group bring out of you.

Perhaps you are correct.  FWIW, I find you very different IRL as well:-)

I'm prone to say that it is the nature of this medium.  It is always very
interesting to me when I meet a person IRL after having communicated with them
via the net-- never do they appear as I'd expect.  While I enjoy the ability to
freely exchange ideas via the net (and email for that matter), I generally find
discussions time-consuming and cumbersome and a poor substitution for f2f
contact.  I am very much a "people" person, and perhaps this form of
communication is not very well suited for people like me.

As I reflect on some of the discussions in which I have participated here, I
found that many times I was characterized as X or Y without being called on my
position first.  So for example, if someone had merely said to me in the
beginning, "So, you think all atheists are innocent butcherers?" I would have
of course replied in the negative.  There even were times where I
point-blankedly stated my position and was then not believed.  I was labeled a
bigot on many topics where I am, in fact, not.  Perhaps it is the desire to cut
to the chase to overcome the cumbersome nature of communicating via keyboards
that is responsible, whereas in a f2f conversation such misunderstandings would
be quickly dispatched.

C'est la vie on the net I guess...

(...) Please fix your quoting. You have omitted the leading ">" from the first line of your quoted material again.... If you can't take care to do this, maybe you're not taking care in your thinking either? (22 years ago, 10-Jul-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Richard, John, It's real simple - Kill Filter each other. I kill filtered ScottA in this group only, and my life is much less stressful ;-) I have no problem reading his posts outside of .debate, but in here, he's as thick-headed (or moreso) than (...)
