In lugnet.off-topic.debate, Thomas Stangl writes:

Or they should lie as their first official statemement as a citizen if they don't
believe in God or any supreme being?

What a repugnant thought.  Are you really that much of a bigot?

What are you talking about???  Do you know what the oath naturalized citizens
must take says?

"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure
all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or
sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that
I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of
America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith
and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United
States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in
the armed forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will
perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by
the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation
or purpose of evasion; so help me God."

"So help me God"

I didn't author the oath, so get off my case.

-John

(...) you didn't but you seem to imply that if I don't believe in God, I shouldn't bother applying for citzenship...? Dan (22 years ago, 29-Jun-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

(...) You'd better elaborate on this, John, because the above statement makes you sound like a truly disgusting person without further expansion. It makes you sound like you're saying "if they don't say "under God", they shouldn't become citizens? (...) (22 years ago, 29-Jun-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
