I read his statement and was at a loss for words. I interpret it exactly as
you do. I had no idea how to respond. I guess you did a good job. I
eventually came to believe (once more -- maybe I'll learn someday) that it is
impossible for me discuss with John. As you say, there is a disconnect.
I am somewhat frightened by the off-handed nature of his advocacy for
discrimination. I am dismayed that someone who seems functionally literate can
be so far off base. And most of all, I am outraged that someone with such a
stance would dare to call themselves an American. John obviously has no clue
about what is (or maybe, was) great in the American people.
There are very few things that I can imagine fighting and dying for. But
protecting America from what John wants it to become is one. Maybe I'll just
leave. But maybe I will kill and die to protect my country. I'd like to think
that's not needed.
Chris
P.S. (five minutes after writing the above) It's amazing how someone as
disenfranchised with our system as myself can actually feel that way. Why
would I even consider fighting John and his ilk for this place? Why not flee
to somewhere better? But the notion of letting his tyrany go unchecked just
sticks in my craw. Weird.
