In lugnet.off-topic.debate, Mike Petrucelli writes:

I can only assume a best case is as Sarah Brady founder of Handgun Control
Inc. stated in the early 80s: "Socialist America cannot be realized until
those who would oppose us have been completly disarmed."

I meant to comment on this yesterday but didn't get around to it.  You
appear to be very fond of this quote; in looking for your post I searched
for "+Brady +socialist" and found that you've previously cited the quote
another two times.  Three times in two years isn't all that much, but the
problem is that the quote is falsely attributed to Brady.

Here's one piece addressing the falsehood, or at least the inaccuracy, of
the quote:

In the December issue of the association's newsletter, The Firing Line, the
following quotation appeared: "Our task of creating a socialist America can
only succeed when those who would resist us have been totally disarmed." The
quote was attributed to Sarah Brady, chairwoman of Handgun Control Inc. and
a "close friend of Bill and Hillary Clinton."

Brady, for those of you who don't know, became involved in gun-control issues
after her husband, James Brady, Ronald Reagan's press secretary, was shot in
the head during John Hinckley's 1981 assassination attempt. In other words,
the wife of an official in the Reagan administration-that legendary hater of
commies, liberals and other enemies of democracy-herself a former employee of
the Republican National Committee, is part of the Great Socialist Conspiracy
to overthrow the government of the United States.

This sounded just a tad unlikely, so I called the association's office and
spoke to a very nice volunteer named Pat. Pat told me that one of their
members had sent in the quotation and that they had confirmed it online at a
couple of places-among them, the Free Republic Web site. (I also found it
online; I asked if they had made any effort to verify the quotation beyond
finding it on the Internet, and she said she didn't know, but she promised to
have the executive director call me. I'm still waiting.

The belief that everything on the Internet is the gopel truth is charming, in
a naive kind of way. In fact, the quotation is a decade-old hoax.

There are other sites discussing the falsehood.  Interestingly, the
dozen-or-so sites I perused that cited the quote as gospel gave no source
for its origin.  Rather like the bogus Quayle quote about speaking Latin in
Latin America--he never said it, but people still love to attribute it to him.
The point is that using a quote as propaganda is an old tactic, and using
a misquote as propaganda is at least as old.  You may not have been aware
that Sarah Brady didn't say that, but now you know, so you should probably
stop assigning the quote to her.  Further, if I'm wrong, I invite someone to
point me to a reference indicating where and when she wrote or said it, and
I'd love to read the original source.

FYI

(...) Well if I can find out where I read it, I will be happy to tell everyone. I do know that it was extremely unlikely that it was fake, otherwise I would not be quoting it. Then again we are talking about conspiracies here. :-) At any rate I will (...) (23 years ago, 25-Jan-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
