Fully automatic weapons are banned - you can't buy them for any amount of

Not at all, and this has never been so.  (I would point that even if inferior
'laws' stated that, they would be negated by the constitution, but that's not
really my point at this time.)

You can buy semi-automatic versions of the same weapons
*and* legally buy the parts to upgrade them to fully automatic.  Or at least
used to - it's not something I keep up on.

Or so my understanding goes - don't base your purchasing habits on what I • said.
:-)

See http://www.atf.treas.gov/regulations/27cfr178.htm for the details.

Fwoosh - that's way too much to wade through.  I found another site that
condensed it more to the essentials.  10 states prohibit the sale of
fully-automatic weapons (machine-guns) entirely.  The rest may or may not
have some retrictions, and further may have other local restrictions or
bans.  Where you can buy a machine-gun (you need BATF approval for
interstate transport in any case) it essentially has to be either pre-1968
for foreign made, or pre-1986 for domestic made, and properly registered
before those dates.  The number available is therefore strictly finite and
will only get smaller, never larger (assuming I read between the lines
properly).  Or to put it another way, those documented in circulation by the
listed dates remain legal, everything else is banned.  And you can only get
them with BATF approval.  Converting any semi-automatic weapon would seem to
be illegal since they weren't registered as fully-automatic prior to the
required dates.
