It's difficult to blame "the media" for anything, unless you start to get
specific.

If you want specifics, I've got doosy for you--In October of 1990, NBC aired a
"special" on Nostrodamis's predictions of world tyrants (by the way, all that
Nostradamis stuff is pure crap). At that time, America and Iraq were at odds
over the oil in Kuwait. So, guess who hosted the NBC special? Charlton Heston,
"Moses" himself and big time NRA guy. Guess who Nostradamis "predicted" to be
a great world tyrant (supposedly with Napoleon and Hitler)? Saddam Hussein.
Granted, Hussein is a scumbag dictator but what a convenient way to stir up
anti-Iraqi hatred. That's propaganda.

  I don't remember that special, but--more than just propaganda--it's
playing to public expectation.  If it had aired two years earlier, no doubt
Qaddafi (has anyone ever agreed on an English spelling of his name?) would
have been the target.  Given the then-current ambient tensions, it's hardly
surprising that a ratings-driven network like NBC would pander to expectation.
That's a great cite, by the way!  Did you simply remember it, or did you
happen to have documentation somewhere?

Yeah, dude, I shouldn't generalize but sometimes I get ticked off at all the
lies Americans are continuously fed, which seem more prominent than small
doses of truth we get.

Do any nations in today's world engage in full and honest disclosure of
information?  If not, then it seems simply a matter of degree, and the US
can't be criticized as the only offender.  Obviously this doesn't make it
right, but to go on about American Lies is to miss the rest of the issue.

(...) Great point, Dave! And that's exactly my point of the media twisting things to suit a political purpose--hence propaganda. (...) I remember it because it ticked me off. I ended up recording it on video. (...) It's not just the lies, but the (...) (23 years ago, 24-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
