| I'm not sure I understand your question perfectly, but I can use clones for two purposes: 1. A cool colour or shape that TLG does not supply. 2. Hacking! | (...) Why not invert a plate in LDraw and group them together, use it as a submodel? You don't need to model something like what you described. But to answer the question, I don't know.
