Retailers, Wal-Mart in particular, dictate to TLC, not the other way around.

Yeah but they cant dictate trademark infringment. They havent paid off
enough polictians for that, I hope.

I imagine Wal-Marts own employees cannot easily afford much Lego. Why would
an expensive toy be a huge seller for the worlds numero uno discount store?

Well my local Wal-mart cant keep the stuff in stock (and its not from me)
so...

What you are observing is very very demographic dependant. If you go into rural
areas, you will find that Lego (or any building block brand) sells less than
they do in urban areas. I will note that I see a relative eveness of interest in
Bionicle regardless of the demographics (not sure why tho). Of particular note
is that a few WMs (typically the old-style small stores) have been seen
deleting (read clearancing) all Lego products other than the red buckets in
the most recent clearance cycle. A few of those stores in rural settings could
not get rid of the NBA collector sets to the local customers at deep clearance.
The particular product theme just has to mesh with the local culture. NBA
doesnt seem to mesh with deep south rural culture.
