Is it just me, or do others think that Mega-blox is increasingly going down
the route of large, specialised pieces that we have bean cursing LEGO for,
for many years?

I've been lamenting that recently myself, but now that I think about it,
MegaBloks has been using large, juniorized pieces for years.  Their Western and
Fantasy sets from ~1996 used 16x8x8 house such as is shown here:

There was also a large 2-piece tree for the 9611 Griffin's Hide-Out, as well as
a big castle and a big mansion around the same time.
So it's hard to say.  They've incorporated a lot of juniorization, but the
trend's been in place for qutie a while.  Also, they continue to put out
high-part-count sets with tons of basic bricks.

It hasn't been that long between the Kittyhawk and this ship, has it?

I believe the Kittyhawk came out in 2000.  But the Legends Viking ship (9604)
had a two-piece hull back in 1995.
