Hey Russell and Dave,
I bought a few Crosswise sets at Big Lots a couple of years ago, to see
how well they would integrate with LEGO bricks. In short, they are totally
incompatible with LEGO or clone brands (Crosswise can't even be called a
clone brand, since it uses raised crosshatching instead of studs for the
bricks to adhere). Even the minifig accessories are incompatible - they are
too thin for a LEGO minifig to grip; also hats and hair won't fit.
My advice? Leave the Crosswise stuff on the shelves and use the money
saved to buy LEGO brand building bricks (or the clone of your choice ; ) ).
