Id like to try writing an RSS aggregator specifically for pictures of LEGO
creations (and related stuff, like shows). ...
|
Late last year, I started a project that kind of addressed this (sorta) but
let it drift. With recent events Ive been seriously considering dusting it
back off, and think its time to actively solicit more feedback.

LENNI is the LEGO
Enthusiast News Network Initiative that adds LEGO-specific flags into the
RSS and Atom specifications. Its still in the proposal and feedback stage,
although Ive let it languish. A very rough and incomplete description is
available at the web site here.
Does this sound like what youre thinking?

Yes, its certainly similar to what I had in mind, though broader in scope --
Im mostly interested in coming up with a better way of finding pictures (what
today you might use Brickshelf for, though in so doing you might miss out on a
lot of neat stuff thats hosted elsewhere).
However, I know that RSS has a thumbnail tag. Probably Atom does too (though
Im not sure; Im pretty new to syndication). So, an image-oriented aggregator
could just present items for which it can find a thumbnail, and skip the others.
|
And if so, would you be interested in writing code that follows this spec?
|
Sure. Well have a bit of a bootstrapping problem, though: theres no use for
an aggregator that expects this spec if there are no feeds providing it, and
theres no use in someone providing a feed of it if there are no aggregators
that read it.
So, one question I have is, are there any existing aggregators that could make
any sense of these extra tags? If there are already products that will let us
filter by, say, the lenni:interest tag, then we can start immediately by
getting someone to provide content in the LENNI format. A custom aggregator
wouldnt be necessary, though it might be nice.
But if existing aggregators cant do that (which seems unlikely, but what do I
know?), then maybe we should start by writing a custom one, based on sample
data, and then try to convince content providers to adopt the format.
Best,
Joe
