Media Advisory - FIRST Robotics Competition - Greater Toronto Regional Event
    The Competition for 'First' is on... First Robotics is North America's
    Largest High School Robotics Competition

    TORONTO, March 31 /CNW/ - About three thousand students from almost 70
schools across Canada and the U.S. have been hard at work designing and
building robots to take part in the 2005 FIRST Robotics Greater Toronto
Regional competition - the largest high school robotics competition in North
America.
    As part of the competition, students are given six weeks to design, build
and test a robot. At the regional competition, these robots must work
cooperatively and in competition in the context of a game that challenges the
limits of the robots and the students.

    What:   Largest high school robotics competition in North America -
            FIRST Robotics Toronto Regional

    Who:    About three thousand students from almost 70 schools across
            Canada and the U.S.

    Why:    To develop students' skills in problem solving, leadership,
            teamwork as well as in manufacturing, testing and operating a
            robot.

    Where:  The Hershey Centre, 5500 Rose Cherry Place, Mississauga

    Friday, April 1 - Open Competition

    The GTA Regional robotics competition is a program of FIRST (For
Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a non-profit
organization founded in 1989 by inventor and scientist Dean Kamen, the
inventor of the Segway personal transportation device. FIRST now reaches over
80,000 students in 21 countries around the world.
    FIRST Robotics Competition Greater Toronto Regional is lead sponsored by
General Motors of Canada Ltd. Other sponsors include: MD Space Missions,
Imperial Oil Foundation, Province of Ontario, Scotiabank, Bell Canada, Boston
Scientific Canada, CAE, Dow Chemical Canada, Intier, Kingbridge Centre,

(...) For those interested, it's a pretty neat event--they hold it at a very large arena and it's literally standing room only in there. Worth an hour or two to watch the best teams playoff. (Note, it's the RC version, not the Lego based FLL (...) (20 years ago, 31-Mar-05, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
