Ok, so my details on this are somewhat sketchy still, but I'll try to
relate as much as possible. I wanted to wait until I at least had my
plane tickets in hand.

What I do know:
- This upcoming Monday, 4 August 2003, will see me and an extensive film
crew from "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" TV out at a billboard on Sunset
Blvd in Los Angeles.
- I will be assembling a 10' x 10' mosaic made of LEGO bricks.
- This is a big promotional thing for Ripley's, so the mosaic is of the
show's host: Dean Cain. The hype is going to be saying that I will have
built the whole thing in one day, but anyone here on LUGNET who knows
anything about mosaic building can do the math and know that that can't
be true. Just suspend you belief and smile knowingly.
- The mosaic will be 'studs out' using 2x2 bricks (for a purposely
blockier resolution than had I used 1x1s -- not to mention the 1/4
construction time using the larger bricks). There are 64 extra large
baseplates, and 36864 2x2 bricks involved (a 'thank you' here to The
LEGO Company for donating the bricks for this project). The mosaic
weighs about 150 pounds.
- The mosaic will be mounted on a billboard somewhere on Sunset Blvd
(north side of street, I think). I'm not exactly sure where... somewhere
near/across from the House of Blues club. It's on a low billboard (only
about 8' off the ground)... not one of the many super elevated boards
which are in that area.

What I do NOT know:
- I'm not sure when all of the hoopla and film footage will be used,
exactly. I'm going to be out there all day Monday (and late into the
night, as well), and I think they are trying to get lots of live
promotion around it. Furthermore, they will be accumulating footage so
that they can have a segment for their TV show later in the season.
- I don't know when that particular episode/segment will air during the
upcoming season.

Anyway, just thought I'd give a 'heads up' to LUGNET about this. If any
LUGOLA-members (or visiting AFOLs) are in the Hollywood area on that
Monday, you might want to cruise down Sunset and look for some LEGO
shenanigans. I would encourage you to hang out, take pictures, and
generally waste your time watching this whole thing... who knows, 40,000
LEGO bricks may end up being scattered across Sunset...

I will return to Alabama the next day and should have enough time to
write up a decent webpage (pictures, details, etc) about the whole
fiasco before I then head up to Brickfest later in the week.

Cheers,

eric harshbarger

Eric, that is so cool! It's going to be a very tough build, is there any way you can prepare the bricks beforehand so that the building will go faster? Can't wait to see pictures, and see it on TV! JohnG, GMLTC (21 years ago, 30-Jul-03, to lugnet.mediawatch)

Wow, very cool indeed!! How did the show producers find you? Or did you purpose the idea to them? jt (21 years ago, 30-Jul-03, to lugnet.mediawatch)

Eric, Any idea what times you will be working? Will the mosaic stay up for a while after you build it? If possible I'd love to swing by on my way to work or maybe on my way home. Bruce (21 years ago, 30-Jul-03, to lugnet.mediawatch)

(...) Dude, this is sick. So cool. Big congrats and all; I'm sure you're getting tired of them. :-) Keep us posted on when/if this will air. That's definitely a time to dust off the vcr. Best, -Chris (21 years ago, 31-Jul-03, to lugnet.mediawatch)
