I think most people base it on how much time they want to invest, vs. the
return they want to achieve. Straight sales are quick, but if you don't
know how much the items are worth, you will either quickly sell everything
too cheaply, or not sell at all. Auctions take longer, are more work, but
most items go for their full value, even if you don't know what that value
is ahead of time.

I did a parts sale, of about 950 pieces. It went well, some stuff sold
*immediately*, most stuff sold within a few days, some parts never sold.
I had made some guesses on the value of pieces, and I was occasionally
wrong.
