Google has actually been doing this for quite some time. I remember seeing
some sort of official announcement on the Google homepage about a year ago.
I tried to figure out exactly when it was, so I checked Google's press
releases and news stories. I couldn't find exactly when they started doing
this, but I know they were doing it at least January 2002 (see news article):

I would be curious to see how active a part LEGO is actually taking. Google
scans the catalogs themselves (you can even send them catalogs you would
like them to offer), so it could be that someone at Google was just a big
LEGO fan.
It certainly is a cool service and just another reason why Google is so cool.
