and no spotlight pylons! The nerve of some places
trying to pass off an obviously returned item as new."

Again, I'm not so sure it's obviously a return, I'm finding a large number of
sets being torn open on the shelves and stripped of important parts.  I'm in
the Hudson Valley of NY, and it's 'depressing' to find so many sets ravaged
in this way.  And I can't believe it's "children"; teens and adults - maybe.

Actually what I found happening at my Target was that they stood the sets up
on their side to display them.  The weight of the train stuff inside caused
the seals to give way and for some of the parts to spill out.  I tried to
push the contents back in a few sets and to lay them down to prevent it.  I
think once the seal is broken and some parts have spilled out, that it is
even harder for some people to resist robbing one set and to pad another.
It's not right, but it's not the same as when they purposely tear open a
set.  I don't condone either!  In some cases, it may be that someone found
their set open and just replaced all the spilled parts into their own even
though the parts might not have come from that set.  Sort of "hedging" their
buy to make sure the set they get isn't missing anything!  It's still not
right, but maybe a little more understandable!  They need to know about Lego
consumer help that will replace anything that might be missing!
The area that I've discovered the most ravaging of sets is the bionicle
sets.  I've seen multiple of those having been ripped open by kids to get at
the different masks!  I hate to see that happening, but I laugh at what
extremes the lego addiction consumes people!  sheesh!

(...) Those little boxes ($1.97 at walmart ?) are probably the single most ravaged item I have observed. Most stores have anywhere from 1-10 of those already broken into. Next time, perhaps TLC should put that type of item in a really strong polybag (...) (23 years ago, 18-Jan-02, to lugnet.market.shopping)
