Interesting - the Kroger grocery store around the corner from my house has
had some LEGO sets in the cereal aisle (of all places) for a couple of
months.  They had a bi-wing blaster, an insectoid set, and a small Ninja
set.  When I first saw them I figured they must have picked some surplus
from a toy wholesaler or something so I expected them to be discounted.
Their prices were $1-$2 higher than Wal-Mart!  I first noticed them around
Christmas when they had quite a few of them.  Over the months the pile has
dwindled so now there are only one or two of each set.  Somebody is buying
them although I don't know why at the price.

Picking up assorted groceries at my local Hannaford store (Newport News,
VA, USA) and what should appear in front of me but a point-of-purchase
display box in the seasonal aisle with four LEGO sets in boxes.  They
were essentially boxed polybags and consisted of the Adventurer with
accessories, the Res-Q personal watercraft, a small race car, and Ninja
Blaster which has the helmeted robber and a double catapult.  I think
the Ninja one was one of the Japanese candy promos.  Each was $2.99
which means I paid a dollar for the box but since I have not seen the
Ninja bag I got one.

Now if only they would carry discontinued Pirate sets...

Didn't Kellogg's or someone have a promo for Lego sets? That might be the reason. I buy all my cereal at Sam's club. A lot cheaper, for the most part. Scott Sanburn (...) (26 years ago, 30-Apr-99, to lugnet.general, lugnet.market.shopping)
