Absurdly stupid question time:  Did you try contacting the seller to find
out if they have the plate in question?  :o)

Not worth the trouble, they didn't sound like a Lego person.

Second absurdly stupid question:  Did you call LEGO Customer Service to
order a free replacement piece if the above failed?  If you're in the US
this is not usually a problem.

Definitely not worth the time IF I can trade someone for it and other pieces.
If I get no nibbles by next week, I'll call CA.

Last absurdly stupid question:  If the set was listed as MIB, I assume that
means the seller opened the box, opened the bags, played with it for a
while, and put the stuff back into the box, but unfortunately missed this
rather important element?

Nope, MIB, with sealed polybags - they opened the seals on the box to see if it
looked like everything was there, but they must not have known the plate is not
in a bag.  They noted in the description that the box was opened but bags
weren't.

Or is it supposed to mean Mint In Box, with unopenend polybags?  If he
stuffed up on the description of the set that's probably double he owes you
for, if you get my meaning.  ;-)

I really think the seller should be careful anyway, describing something as
having the box, as MIB - that seems to imply MISB which is completely
different, but that some people look at something described as MIB, and
think, "cool, it's unopened" when it's not ...

Cheers ...

Footnote:  When my spelling checker hit polybags, it came back with
pollywogs as a suggested spelling!!  :-))))))  I had some as a kid, not too
bad IMHO.  Nice biscuit, too.  I believe they're still made.

I just got a 6411 via Ebay that was MIB, but unfortunately the 6x12 plate
for the top of the Cafe was missing (wasn't polybagged originally, so the
seller might have missed it).

I need one in MINT condition, as the rest of the set was just removed from
the bags.

Or if anyone could let me know what currently available set has a 6x12
white plate, I'd appreciate it.
