I purchased the Lego Animals and Lego Figures books tonight at the Media Play
in Ogden. Both books cost less than $10 total with tax.
Both books look great but are certainly geared to a younger crowd. My first
impression of the two books is that the "figures" book is the better of the
two based on the details achieved in making the figures. My second impression
is that the statement made by DK that you can build these items "from bricks
you have at home" is not realistic. Outside of mega-Lego enthusiasts, I doubt
the average kid has all the specialty bricks necessary to make the necessary
figures. Example: How many "pre-pirate" era kids have brown 2x2 round plates
or the soccer ball from the World Cup soccer sets? The animals book will
likely be more satisfying for younger Lego fans as it uses pieces more
frequently found in the freestyle sets.
The books are richly illustrated and the building instructions are easy to
follow. Each creation is accompanied by several creative ideas to improve
their "playability."
Here's a brief review of the contents of each book:
Animals: How to build a...Camel, Rabbit, Cat, Elephant, Whale, Kangaroo,
Tortoise, Tiger, Giraffe, Lion, Frog, Gorilla, Dog, Antelope, Bear.
Figures: How to build a...Ballerina, Body Builder, Roller Skater, Soccer
Player, Golfer, Skateboarder, Drummer, Cameraman, Skier, Baseball Player,
Artist, Break Dancer, Scuba Diver, Rock Star, Goal Keeper.
