On Friday, Oct. 15th, the first Utah Lego get together was hosted by the
Sproat family in Orem, UT. Here's a report from the fun event:
In attendance: Barbara and Jeremy Sproat, Ashley Glennon, Joseph and
Elizabeth Gonzales, Brian Hacking, Jason Moulding and Jeremy's sister.
The party started off with big doses of socializing and fun. Jeremy and
Barbara showed off cool trains, space creations and numerous other projects
under construction. Jason created a cool, small scale "Droideka" and a steer
skeleton that were both neat. Barbara had created several minifig cars and a
cool, jet powered train car using podracer parts.
Brian Hacking along with the Sproats provided pizza, cookies, cake and drinks!
The Sproats had carefully crafted a sheet cake to look like a 2x4 brick.
Ashley Glennon showed off a two-foot tall minifig amusement ride controlled by
an RCX. Ashley also showed off a hard (printed) copy of his minifig art
website. Later in the evening in an impromptu session, about six new works of
art were created by Ashley and Jeremy's sister. Note: Jeremy's junk box
(from which we made art) puts some whole collections to shame.
Joseph Gonzales brought several special items including a cool heavy artillery
truck built from a combination of adventurers sets. Joseph showed off his
fantastic Phantom of the Opera entry for Matthew Verdiers Halloween contest.
Joseph also brought a few stock Rock Raiders items for all to view.
Jason Moulding brought an accordion file full of castle, Ninja and other
instructions. Of special note were his European and Asian instructions.
Between the few members that were present, we had visited every Legoland and
had four CLSOTW web sites.
Barbara and Jeremy shared a photo-album full of LL Windsor photos. Ashley
Glennon showed slides from the Grand Opening of Legoland California and a trip
to LL Denmark.
After the slide show, Joseph Gonzales served up big doses of generosity by
hosting several games with excellent prizes. The first game was a stumper in
which you had to identify the name, set number and year of release for about
15 old sets. The next game was a mindbender to see how many words you could
spell out of "Black Seas Barracuda." The final game involved building a Rock
Raiders set while wearing garden gloves.
Not only were the games fun, but check out the prizes Joseph generously
awarded: A small Technic set, a Lego green brick service pack, castle
polybags, an unopened box of minifigs, Rock Raiders mini-sets, Adventurers
polybags and more! Thank you Joseph! Everyone left with something!
After the games, the trades began. Ashley and Joseph brought items to trade
including old Legoland sets, a Technic powerpack, a model team Jeep, a Lego
Contraptions book, various polybags etc. Just about everyone traded or
promised to swap something and left happy.
After a quick digital photo session and some more socializing on what we
REALLY do for a living, the event was over. We decided to meet about once a
quarter and that we should do this again. We never found time to name our
group. [Watch for a naming thread coming soon!]
A great time was had by all.
Thanks to Barbara and Jeremy for hosting this inaugural event.
Ashley
