I’m running the Children’s Program (ages 6-12) at the Philcon SF convention this December, and I’ve expanded my domain to include LEGO activities (for all ages). Among them, I’m compiling topical shorts from BrickFilms, and a couple of “slide”shows to inspire participants at an open building event later than weekend -- examples of starships and mecha.

The interest in starships at an SF con is obvious, but since Philcon has anime and gaming tracks there’s a pre-built interest in mecha, too. So: replicas and originals. I want to “wow” the audience, which will include kids and non-AFOLs; so photo quality is an essential consideration -- are details visible? Does is project well? (E.g., black MOCs don’t photograph well.)

I’ve been poking through Brickshelf and lugnet.build.mecha’s Featured Models, but I could also use suggestions. Once I make selections I’ll be asked formal permission to use the images. (They’ll be credited to individual builders, naturally.) If any of the models have “stories” attached (“this technique originated by...,” “Part of the XYZ fan theme created by...”) that’d be cool; if they’re already written down, just point me at the URL.

I’m especially interested in examples of SNOT techniques, elements used in unexpected ways, and hands; plus replicas from highly recognizable sources (Eva, Gundam, Robotech, Trek, etc.). I think I’ll mark up the images to highlight the specific elements used (hinges, minifig tools, Bionicle parts), and I might build samples (heads, joints, hands) to pass around.

Thank you.

There will be a mini-exhibit at the con; I’ll probably have the assistance of area clubs (DelVaLUG, GardenSLUG) in assembling it. Eric Sophie will probably be bringing some of his large bots.
