...but someone else isn't.

No, no car accidents this time, though a car is involved.

HUH?

That's what I said this morning at 7 AM or so when my door was being
pounded on (after waking up a little while before when someone pounded
on the door of the person across the hall). Ok, drag myself out of bed
AGAIN (after getting to bed at a ridiculous 4 AM or so). There's a cop
at the door. "Can I speak with you for a minute? Did you notice anything
unusual last night or hear anything?"

Turns out someone got shot in our parking lot. They had the whole
parking lot taped off and the place was swarming with cops (there must
have been a dozen cops). The folks who live at the front of the building
said they heard the shots (which occurred last night at 8 PM or so), and
one guy even saw someone running away (but I guess no one thought enough
of it to call the police). A group of college students apparently down
here for spring break apparently noticed the stiff in the morning
(though people had also seen them coming in and out or something around
8 last night - hmm, I wonder if there's any connection, I guess the cops
think so because they all got a free ride down to the station for
additional questioning).

It took them until 11:00 or even later to clear the scene, and they just
had the car towed with the body still inside (they didn't want to do a
complete investigation here I guess given the rain).

The cop who talked to me was impressed with my collection though.

Here's some pictures:

In the lower left, you can see a forensic expert checking out some of
the evidence. The particular item being examined here is a takeout bag
from McDonalds. My car is just to the right of the minivan (or maybe one
more car down). You can see the car in which the victim lies covered
with a red tarp.

Here they are checking out evidence lying around the car. Once they put
out those little yellow tags (which are numbered), I could see a brass
colored object lying in front of one of the tags at the feet of the
uniformed woman wearing jeans (she's the forensics expert). Said object
is presumably one of the bullet casings.

Here they are preparing to tow the vehicle away. They towed it away
covered in the tarp. I wonder what folks who saw the car being towed
down the road thought. I can imagine thoughts running through their
heads of a wrecked car drenched in blood or something. Note that unless
I missed them taking the body out separately, the body is still in the
vehicle (the cops told us it was highly likely that they would tow the
vehicle with the body still in it). As far as I know, they have not
opened the doors or anything (I saw them peering in the window several
times). The car was still running when the body was discovered, so
presumably at some point the reached in to kill the ignition, and
presumably they also checked the body for a pulse.

What a way to start one's birthday... At least I can still enjoy the
rest of the day.

Frank

(...) Yup, they should be. There should be one of those yellow tags for each bullet casing. I don't think they use those for any other kind of evidence (though I'm not entirely sure). eric (24 years ago, 3-Mar-01, to lugnet.people, lugnet.loc.us.nc)

(...) Let's hope they got to finish their meal before the incident. (...) Let's hope the tarp didn't get blown off while they towed it. Will they auction the car eventually with 'one careful owner...' ? Happy birthday Frank. pete.w (24 years ago, 3-Mar-01, to lugnet.people, lugnet.loc.us.nc)
