Hi Folks,

First of all, I'm gonna come right out and embarrass myself, 'cause
that's what I'm good at.  Can anybody fill me in on what the MIT LEGO
Mindfest event is?  I was under the assumption that it was all
robotics/RCX, but now I'm not so sure ... I feel like a fool for asking
this, since I'm a grad. student here at MIT and pretty coherent in the
Lugnet community.  Ah well, anyone care to explain to the slow kid?

As for the Group Projects ...

Here's an idea:  Could we come up with a simple hands-on game of some
sort, like a video game in 3D made out of LEGO?  I don't know, maybe
something where two people each use a LEGO joystick
(http://homepages.svc.fcj.hvu.nl/brok/legomind/insights/index.htm)
to manipulate a ... hand/claw/projectile launcher? to
manipulate/move/shoot/score? and earn points in a given time frame?  The
high scores could be kept track of during the day.  It could be
something like using the joystick to aim a cyber-slam type extender to
hit a moving target, or some sort of lever to launch small balls towards
a hoop.  Just a thought :)

Another idea is to have an informal "contest" of sorts among the NELUG
community, and then present the entries.  Give everybody the same broad
theme ... something suitably inspirational, and providing for
interpretation, yet detailed enough to produce a consistent theme among
entries.  For example, "Breakfast" ... One person might make LEGO eggs
(sunny side up) and bacon in a frying pan - all life size.  Another
might make a minfig scene, and yet another might make a technic-sized
neanderthal spearing a mammoth as the sun came up.  (where'd that come
from???)  Without intercommunication, the variety of ideas could be
really impressive.  Maybe specify that it has to be under a given size
(12"x12"x12" ?)  Each person comes up with an entry, and people can view
different styles, different thoughts on the topic, different color
schemes.

Mmmmmm, Star Wars :)   AT-ATs, AT-STs.  Well, I'll admit, these have
been on my mind a lot lately, so they sound great to me.  I like the
ideas I've heard tossed about here.

As an aside, has anybody else here bought the DK Ultimate LEGO book from
S@H?  I just got mine yesterday, and I was really really impressed -
it's a beautiful, colorful, fascinating book.  Why haven't I heard
anybody else talking about it?

Well, there are some thoughts.  I'm looking forward to the next meeting
(wheresoever it may be), and I'm looking forward to going to bed tonight
much much much too late and getting up tomorrow much much much too
early, all in the name of my ABS addiction.

take care, all!
shaun

(...) You are correct in the the MIT Mindfest is primarily for RCX/Mindstorms but in talking with Suzanne at the last NELUG meeting she mentioned that we could do almost anything LEGO related we wanted. Some main reason for this, as I understand it, (...) (...) I'm probably a mile or two from the rail station (it's on the Franklin line). I could plan to meet people at a train if you know which one you'll be on or if you want to call my house when you get in. Your best bet is by car, though, since the (...)
