The previous posts mentioned some of the many historical attractions around the area.

If you are interested in more natural scenery, Great Falls Park http://www.nps.gov/grfa/ (about an hour west of DC) and Shenandoah National Park http://www.nps.gov/shen/ (about two hours west of DC) are both very nice.

You’d definitely have to rent a car to get to either location.

Lenny gave excellent suggestions on places to visit. If you have transportation, such as a rental car, you should also visit George Washington's home, Mount Vernon, (URL), historic Williamsburg, the colonial capitol of Virginia (URL) and Jamestown, (...)
