Thanks for the suggestions, and generally speaking this is what I tried to do
in the past.

In the last couple times I've made grab bags, I've always tried to include at
least a few sets with unusual or hard-to-find parts and colors.  The problem is
that unless sets are bought at a fair discount, $5-worth of pieces end up not
seeming like very much.  Without the unity of instructions, the piles of pieces
can seem fairly random and unsatisfying.  In order to make sure people felt
like they were getting their money's worth, the last time I averaged about a
40% discount on the LEGO included.  That is, the $5 grab bag actually had about
$8.30 worth (MSRP) of LEGO included.

One solution is to get a bucket or two to beef up the number of pieces in
each bag, and while I have done that, it's just more interesting and better for
trading to have specialized pieces and minifigs.  Last time, most of the $10
bags had 3 minifigs in them.

I'm hoping that there will be a Target or Kmart sale before the get-together
so I could put some new stuff into the bags, but we'll have to see.  Let's keep
our fingers crossed!
