I also want to echo the thanks to the people at RLD & LLW who were
helpful, obliging and very generous with those "1kg" bags.  I was chatting
to the bloke from LLW who was getting a bit upset with people nicking all
the bits from Lego Heaven (we'd been asked to take only a few bits from
there, and the rest from the huge boxes back at HQ) and he was saying he
understood our enthusiasm, but didn't want all the stock nicked!

This was understandable, but I think the problem was that there was no clear
indication of what was allowed.  Part of the tour as advertised was to have
a few elements from the stockroom, yet the moment I entered I (and a few
others) was told we'd been in there long enough and should leave.  I presume
this was because a few people had already been in there for a while.

We'd been told earlier that all the stockroom elements were present in the
tubs, but from talking to people the day after it became apparent that a
range had been kept back for the afternoon session.  Again, it was sensible
planning to keep a few tubs back to re-fill for the afternoon session, but
it meant that many of the parts I was looking for in the tubs simply weren't
there.

I don't want this to be taken as a complaint, because I realise that the
staff may have more reason to complain about us; but, I think a lot of the
grabbing was going on because people were confused about what they could
have.  I'll admit to grabbing handfuls from the tubs myself in the last few
minutes, so yes, there may have ('allegedly') been more than a kilo there.

If we'd simply been given a transparent baggie each and told we could take,
say, 20 elements from the stockroom and no more, I doubt there would have
been any cheating.  Instead, no-one knew what was allowed, so some were
taking liberties while some people didn't get any.  I got some elements I
wanted that weren't in the tubs (22 to be exact, after which I was asked to
stop and did), but I'd have much preferred the chance to look around and
take my time, even if it meant ending up with less.

I'd also suggest the inclusion of some of the surplus/recycle tubs or
whatever we had last time, for anyone not as crazy about rare parts.  With
all the specialist elements in the tubs, there seemed to be a lack of actual
building elements this time.  Again, I don't want this to be taken as
grouching, just feedback.

So, once again my thanks to everyone at Legoland Windsor, Red Letter Days
and the UKLEG organisers for making this possible.  It was a great day out,
and I'd recommend it to anyone.  I hope that my comments can help to make
future events more enjoyable for the people going, and less problematic for
the staff.  I also hope these continue, as I might just go again next year.

And Jason - I owe you an apology - I saw an entire tub of
those tan jets, but assumed one of the AFOLs around it who knew you better
would have taken one for you.

Thanks for the thought, but this was a fairly minor thing.  It's just one of
the interesting parts I only got one of from the previous tour, and would
have liked to pair up.

I was thinking how it could be improved - perhaps someone could pass
feedback to the organisers?  I'd appreciate a more hands-on demonstration
of design - perhaps give us a piece of Lego graph paper to experiment
with?

Perhaps the tubs could have been in a separate (soundproof) area so that
those who want more demonstrations can have them, whereas those who just
want to start digging can?

I'm sure there will be more discussions between LLW and the UKLEG
organisers.  I hope that nothing discussed on LUGNET prejudices that
discussion either, as it is read by everyone (including LLW staff we now
know) whilst still being the main venue for communication for the UK fans.

  More LLW/RLD feedback

Firstly, I'm going to do a "me too" and say what a fantastic time the RLD/LLW experience was - this was my first time, and if you haven't done it already, you will not be disappointed. I can't really justify going back in October :-( but I will (...) (22 years ago, 17-Aug-02, to lugnet.loc.uk)
