Keep in mind that the older sets (the ones that came out more than two years
ago) are usually hard to find. They rarely show up in the stores here in
Israel.
For a better reference on Technic sets you can check some excellent review
sites:
Gaurav Thakur: <http://cp5670.250x.com/TC/reviews/main.htm>
Tobbe Arnesson: <http://www.arnesson.nu/lotek/official/setsIOwn.html>
Stephen Robson: <http://www.westwood.u-net.com/lego/reviews.htm>
Again, some sets can only be found on eBay from time to time and cost an arm
and a leg.
there are also the Mindstorms expansion sets:
<http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?qc=lego/mindstorms/expansionset>
<set:3801> has a touch sensor, a remote control and a rotation sensor (very
useful)
You can check for the <set:3800> inventory on
<http://marc.klein.free.fr/3800.htm>. It has some pneumatics and a motor.

I would *love* going to a LEGO show. Not being able to is probably the worst
thing about being in the middle of the middle-east. (Followed by that pesky
Arab-Israely conflict I heard about)
:-)
About the LEGO pricing in Israel, I agree with you but I also think it's mostly
due to bad pricing policy by the importer.
There is no explanation to the fact that it's cheaper to ship LEGO to
Australia, pay costumes there, pay a guy there to buy it for you and ship it to
Israel, pay costumes here and still pay less than it costs here in Israel.

I studied math & cs for a BA and graded exercises last year while studying for
MA. I took this year off though so I'm not there now. There are a couple of
interesting courses in the next semester (mostly by Prof. Vigderson) so I might
show my face for a few hours a week.
In what year are you? Last year there was a course by Dr. Singer that involved
LEGO (something with small robots) and a course by Dr. Ben Ezra that involved
actual RIS and RCX. They bought about 15 RIS 1.5 for it.
I don't know about this year, if you're interested you can check with them.
(It's possible that the course will take place even if it's not in the current
shnaton. Last year it was set up as a last minute thing)

My pleasure!

Ha, I know what you mean, I loved the strike we had...

| Hi David. Thank you so much for your post. It is very informative. You mentioned many sets so this serves as a nice little introduction to good sets that are out there. I'll certainly look them up before I go on this next shopping round. (...) (...) (23 years ago, 19-Nov-01, to lugnet.loc.il)
