I am visiting Germany (Black Forest area) in August.

I am planning to buy some Lego - secondhand is fine, perhaps from a
fleamarket.  I would also like some 9v train stuff, and wondered what the
best way of finding this stuff would be, in a 3-week holiday.

Here is an email I sent my brother-in-law (before Lego re-introduced 4558!)
which should say much the same - please don't laugh at my poor German if it
does not!

"Ich habe gehort das, ins Deutschland, gebraucht Lego ist ganz billing.  Ist
das var?  Ich mochte (Ja, ich, nicht die kinde!) gebraucht Lego Zug - wie

einen schachtel sein).  Wielicht von ein Flohmarkt?  Ist das moglich?

Ich habe auch gehort das einige alt kaufladen hast alt Lego, in schachtel.
Weiss du ein kaufladen?"

Dear Robert,

your German is at least better than the German of the average American. And
whats more important: I excatly understood what you are asking for.

I think with someone here around (your brother in law or an AFOL) you might be
lucky to find the one or other older set in shops (search for "Vedes"; that is
a ring of independent toy stores with good prices and often enough with old
stuff.)

But you would need more than a little luck to find a metroliner in any shop.
Even 4559 are really rare now (I haven't seen any of them for ages).

Here are hundreds of AFOLs now in Germany and it is difficult to find used
stuff on flea-markets. Often there has been a professional ebay seller already
there and you will find nothing when you arrive.

I wish you good luck!
