The real "treasure shops" are the very small family owned toy stores that are
located in small towns and villages around Germany. Unfortunately these are
becoming scarcer with the people retiring or dying off. The ones that are still
left have been plundered of their "treasures" - i.e. old LEGO sets from the 60's
and 70's. Some even had stuff going back to the 50's. Just look at the auction
sales of old LEGO, most of them are from Germany, with a few from Belgium, Denmark,
Sweden, etc. European small toy store owners don't have SALES. They just let
things sit on the shelves for 20 years or more. Back in the 1980's I scavenged the
small toy stores of Bavaria from Coburg in the north to Garmish-Partenkirchen in
the south, and also checked out a lot of towns in Baden-Württenberg. Of course, I
didn't have to go more than 1 mile from where I was born (near Coburg) to find the
2 European Dealer Windows & Doors boxes with 2000 windows (the FOTC story that
everyone loves to hate). The adrenaline that went through my body (everytime I
came across an old Toy store that was "untouched" by LEGO scavengers) was
exhilarating.
