Yesterday, I considered making a withdrawl from my paypal account for the
first time.  The exchange rate from $US to $CDN is disappointing.
They brag about how great their rates were in October 2001:

When they first started letting Canadians withdraw to a bank account, the
exchange rate was very bad. Example: on June 19th I withdrew from Paypal to
my bank acct and got 1.4798. Oanda.com shows 1.5356 for that day, so I lost
3.77%. March 20th I got a Paypal rate of 1.5191 vs oanda's 1.567, a loss of
3.15%.

Since October 2001 the rate has been better - for example on July 10 I did a
Paypal withdrawal and got 1.47891 vs 1.5121 on oanda, a loss of 2.24%. Just
for comparison, on 9 July I exchanged a US$ MO at my bank and got 1.4908:
oanda.com shows 1.5238 that day, so I "lost" about 2.21%. Not really that
much difference, but then you do have to add in the US$0.55 / CN$0.85 Paypal
charges us for every withdrawal.

There are better days and worse days, perhaps because of lag-time in the
rates published on oanda or used internally by Paypal.

(...) Can you tell in advance what rate they are going to use? If so you could wait for the "better" days... (22 years ago, 16-Jul-02, to lugnet.market.services, lugnet.loc.ca)
