LugOz 2001-1

Well, it finally happened. On the weekend of Jan 26-28 a whole bunch of AFOLs converged on Sydney’s southern (& western) suburbs. As usual, everyone else covers it better than me, so here’s a link to some of their comments.

You might also want to check out this page by Richard Parsons.

This mammoth event also included a trip to the Lego show at the Powerhouse museum, as well as a treasure hunt on the way back to Melbourne (three guesses what treasure we were hunting).

Firstly, I’d like to (on behalf of the travelling MUGs) thank Peter White & family for putting up with us. But if you decide to visit them for a game of 8-ball, here’s why you’re wasting your time...
We all know the favourite toys in this house...

There were many MOCs on display - heres a selection. My favourites were Richard’s boats (unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of the Valhalla), ‘cos I like BIG, but Kev’s medieval selection came close. Note that my crane is missing, not through modesty, but because the only picture I took turned out really blurry...

Kevin’s Castle & sundry items
   Peter’s X-wing and assorted goodies
Richard’s Nautically oriented stuff (Note: MegaBlok alert!!)
   The train layout

The big event of the day was the BrikWars saga, later code-named “Blocker Morant”. Here’s some pictures. No apology for the “MUGgy” bias...

The initial placements
How the SLUGs started. Note the doomed Thunderbird 1 and decorative Millenium Falcon...
And the pirates, caught in the middle
   The first attacks
The damage that can be done with an innocuous radio tower (exactly as planned, of course!!)

The Briktoria regiment unveils it’s secret weapon. Ja-ja squadron!! Led by Timmy!!
Hopeless position for the monkey - and the tank’s pretty much useless now, too
General Carnage (not to be confused with Field Marshall Montgoonerie)
   More general carnage
Ground zero. This was pretty much the beginning of the end, so I won’t rub their noses in it any longer

And on the way back, the MUGs did manage to find some treasure. A highlight was the Toy Kingdom in Young, where we found an old london bus. I think this is early 60s, but Ben’ll know exactly! If you look at the underneath shots, you can see the unusual pattern on the bottom of the plate between floors.

At Wagga wagga (I think!) we also came across this huge K’nex dinosaur. I’m not really a K’nex fan, but after seeing this, I may develop a side-interest...
