Well, I attended the special VIP preview, last night, with my family in tow.
About half way there, I realised I’d left my camera at home... but that turned
out to be okay because this show is the same as the last one - the one that was
held at David Jones city store in Jan 2004.
Some of the exhibits have had labels added, some have had repairs to the
action/lights push buttons on the outside of the cases.
There was the Lego production & history display, the Asia-Pacific significant
buildings display, HP, Star Wars, Bionicle, Creator (or was it Designer?) and so
on, as well as some large sculptures and a couple of play pits and tables.
Presumably it was just part of the VIP preview, but child attendees were
receiving a showbag and a Lego racers medal. The showbag contained a Duplo
Polybag set, a Bionicle poster, a Knights Kingdom water bottle, a 2006 catalog
and the latest World Club Magazine. Kids also received a Lego balloon. (The
balloon wasn’t made of Lego, it just had the Lego logo on it).
I must admit that I was a bit disappointed with a show. The displays are
recycled and a little old. The production and history display gives 2001
production figures, for example. Although, to be fair, the Asia-Pacific had had
some labels added to make it clear what the significant buildings and structures
were, so there had been some updating since the earlier display.
My wife, who hadn’t seen the DJ’s show was moderately impressed. The scale is
not quite awesome, and she commented she’d seen plenty of building by fans at
similar scales and similar qualities, which is a testament to the work being
done by fans in the community at present.
My daughter was moderately impressed too. But that was mostly because it was an
opportunity to push buttons, and to get some cheap Clickits.
And there were show specials too. Nothing that grabbed me as particularly vool,
but some good, cheaper than standard retail. The Exo-Force Robots were $20.99,
for instance. At the STUDs meeting on Saturday, there was interest in RC cars,
and the show has 8378 “Red Beast” for $81.99.
I can also report that I did attend the preview as a Lego Ambassador, and I have
been talking to Lego and their PR agency in the last week, and will be helping
them by doing an interview with the SMH online later today. So, kudos to Lego
Australia... hopefully we can show that adult fans can be a real asset to the
company!
