Brisbane Moonbase

At our recent BUGS meeting at Mel's place (which nobody has written up as our
regular scribe Aaron could not make it), we talked making our next BUGS meeting
a "moonbase" theme in which everyone (who feels like it) builds a moonbase
module which we will then interconnect into a vast moonbase (the vastness being
in direct proportion to the number of people who build a module) at the
meeting.

Note that we don't have a date or venue yet for the next BUGS meeting, but
having higher-order brains than (say) reptiles, I think we can all grasp the
concept of the existence of a next meeting without those specifics. This is
incidentally the reason why the dinosaurs probably died out, as they were
unable to organise the necessary scenario planning sessions needed to tackle
strategic issues like the Ice Age and the rise of mammals. But, enough about
dinosaurs and modern management practices ...

A number of you had not heard about the moonbase concept, so please see

http://www.classic-space.com/moonbase/start/

for details. But basically everyone builds on a 48x48 flat grey baseplate. You
can build whatever you want in the middle of the baseplate PROVIDED you have
the appropriate corridors at the sides of each baseplate for connecting to
other modules. See the URL above for the precise design of the connecting
corridor.

As you will see in some of the examples, not every module has corridors on all
4 sides. However, if you think about it, if everyone had only a single
corridor, then clearly we could only connect them together in pairs.  If
everyone only had 2 corridors, then we could only put them together as a long
snake. So, in order to create the most flexible design for the overall
moonbase, it is best if most of us can try to have as many corridors available
for connection. However, any moonbase layout will result in some corridors
being on the outer edge of the moonbase, so can you also prepare some "caps" to
seal off your corridors which are not needed for interconnection (again see the
URL for some examples).

Clearly, for interconnection, the most important issue is getting the shape and
placement of the corridors correct. Colour is not relevant, but according to
the URL above, a predominantly grey colour scheme will unify the overall
appearance of the moon base. However, why does a moonbase needs to have an
unified appearance when no earth-based city worries about that too much? So, I
think do as you please about colour scheme, although I will be going with a
predominantly grey exterior personally (sacrificing The Church of Steeple
Cheney in the process).

If you look in http://www.classic-space.com/moonbase/links/ , you will see a
number of modules that various people have created, but being a moonbase,
modules tend to fall into one of two categories, focussing either on the
"space" nature (focussing on space transport, which caters to those with
space/technics interests) or "town" nature (focussing on everyday living in the
moonbase, e.g. coffee shops and banks).Or if you are into surface vehicles,
then you can also build them to scoot around under the moonbase (note the rules
about maintaining an empty area around the edge of the baseplates for surface
vehicles to use as roads). So I think a lot of different theme interests can be
accommodated with the moonbase idea. And yes, Aaron, I am sure they will need a
fire brigade on the moon, but probably with more breathing apparatus than usual
:-)

Also, I think there is a lot of potential for cross-theming (that is, pick
something from another theme and then "space"-ify it). I look forward to
whatever variant of the Armada Flagship that Michael can come up with!

So, is there enough interest in this idea for us all to start building? I don't
want to turn up with the only module!
