In lugnet.loc.au, Benjamin Whytcross writes:
I wasn't nessesarily referring to lugnet on this, just • making a general
statement about the way things seem to be [unfortunately].

1 thing that springs to mind though, is the number of posts • regarding things
like WalMart, and other sales. These messages, which are • only of intrest to
the US always get posted in .general. Unfortunately, • nothing gets done about
having these either posted in .loc.us, • or.market.shopping/wherever. This
makes it hard to sift through .general looking for • anything. [Admittedly, I
can't recall what is allowed to be posted in .general • regarding sales, but I
feel that this sort of posting would be better in .loc.us, • and .market, not
.general, and I try to keep news of Aus sales in .loc.au, • so as not to cause
offense to people who would have no intrest in this.]

OK, good point.  Thanks.  Hadn't noticed that, and
wouldn't've seen any
problem if Aus sales had been posted in .general either.  But
now that you
mention it, announcements of sales and such ARE rather
off-topic to .general.

It's not the placing of sale info that bugs me, it is the assumption that
everyone wants/needs to know about this. I believe simple courtesy would
dictate that information regarding what is basically an item of intrest to
the US people would be placed in .loc.us, rather than filling a forum which
I believe is designed/should be designed for items of international intrest.
[which is why I only post sale info to .loc.au.][And I'm not sure items
regarding canada and the US could really be designated international,
either, but that's my opinion.]

Also, due to there being more americans on lugnet, • everything seems aimed at
making their life easier. For someone from Australia who is • new to lugnet,
but has been collecting lego for some years, a set name • like crocodile
engine would mean nothing, as the set was called 'FEDERAL • RAILWAY ENGINE'
when it was released here in 1991. However, on Lugnet and • pause (and most
other pages), all reference to sets is given in a way that • makes it easy for
US-ers to use, but at the expense of the rest of the world. • [Even a link on
the set info page on pause, with a list of official names • the set has had in
different countries would be a nice gesture to the rest of • the world, and
help prove that the lugnet/pause site isn't only about US info.]

OK, gotcha.  Thanks the for examples.  Starting to see what you mean.

Part of the set-DB restructuring BTW is to include
locale-specific names for
sets and to index on multiple locales.  What do you think BTW
of the two-
haracter locale designators shown here on one of Joshua
Delahunty's review
pages?--

I think it's great to be able to see multiple names in such a way.  Jim • Hughes
does something similar on his pages, for example:

?    http://w3.one.net/~hughesj/technica/index/800/850.html

but uses both 2- and 3-character locale abbreviations.  I think what Jim • also
did with the dual set numbers shown is tops.

I'll look at these tonight, when I get home to web access.
